Gum Grafting

Gum grafting is primarily used to treat receding gums, especially where tooth has been exposed. When plaque and bacteria build up at the gum line, the gums start to pull away from the teeth and stretch, forming little pockets around the buildup. Even when these little pockets are cleaned out, they remain at the gum line and cause the gums to recede. Dr. Eric Meyer, DDS can help you correct this by repairing deficient gums with a gum graft.

A gum graft procedure consists of harvesting healthy tissue from the roof of the patient’s mouth and transferring it to the site that needs reinforcement. This gives the deficient gum a replacement, and encourages growth of new material around the graft.  Gum grafting can be performed when receding gums become unsightly, or to cover teeth that have been exposed by receding gums and become much more sensitive.  If you think you could benefit from a gum graft, please contact us.

Have You Had A Cleaning This Year?

At the dental practice of Dr. Eric Meyer, DDS we encourage all our patients to maintain a great oral health routine at home, but it is still important to come into the office for regular professional cleanings.  During the holidays, we want everyone looking forward to the New Year and maintaining great oral hygiene!  However much you brush and floss, some harmful bacteria grow in your mouth that cause gum disease and can only be removed by a dental professional.

It’s important to see a professional regularly not just to clean your teeth, but also to locate and monitor areas in the mouth that may need special attention, and a dentist can tell you if you may be missing a spot or skipping an important step in your regular oral care routine.  During a teeth cleaning, a hygienist thoroughly clean the area above and below the gum line with scaling tools to rid them of plaque and tartar. After the surfaces of the teeth are cleaned, the hygienist flosses between every one of your teeth and may apply fluoride if recommended by the dentist. Come see us for a cleaning to make a great impression during the holidays, and start the year off with your best smile!

Diabetes and Gum Disease

Diabetes is a metabolic condition that causes all sorts of other health issues, and unfortunately, the gums are not spared. As practitioners of dental sleep medicine as well as general dentistry, we’ve assisted a lot of diabetic patients at the Fullerton office of Dr. Eric Meyer. Our hope is that if people with diabetes are aware of their increased risk for gum disease, they will work with us more closely to protect themselves.

When people have uncontrolled high blood sugar, they are more prone to inflammation throughout their bodies. Although inflammation is a useful immune system response, chronic inflammation in response to a gum pocket infection will not remove a source of tooth decay. It will, however, make the gums painful, swollen, and red, and cause them to bleed. There are other causes of inflammation besides infections, but diabetic people with high blood sugar suffer from weakened immune systems and gum disease is the main cause of their higher rates of gum inflammation.

Recent studies have established that gum disease and diabetes exacerbate each other. As more pathogens grow and are inhaled, the body has more difficulty regulating blood sugar. But there is also some evidence that treating gum disease leads to better-controlled blood sugar, making it especially important for people with diabetes to brush, floss, and maintain regular dental appointments.

Tooth-Friendly Holiday Food

Candy canes and other sugary snacks are everywhere you look this time of year, and that’s not great news for your teeth. We at Dr. Eric Meyer’s Fullerton dental office want our patients to enjoy the holidays, but getting tooth decay or gum disease is no fun. Fortunately, most sources of tooth decay have a healthier alternative.

When food debris and sugary residue is stuck to our teeth, bacteria consume it and secrete acid as their waste product. The acid is what causes dissolution of enamel and other oral tissues. Bacteria can eat starches as well as simple sugars, but leaving easily-digested simple sugars on the teeth for a long time will give bacteria lots of time to eat and produce acid. Two of the most common sources of sugary residue are hard candies and sugary drinks. Both of them are consumed slowly and dry out the mouth, leaving it with less saliva to wash sugar away. Of course, if debris from a starchy food such as potatoes gets stuck between the teeth, it could be a source of tooth decay, too.

Alternating sips of sugary beverages with drinks of water is a good way of rinsing them and keeping up saliva levels. Another idea is to replace hard candy with sugar-free versions, which can also stimulate additional saliva production. Brushing and flossing soon after eating is the best defense against tooth decay, but in a situation where a person is snacking over a long period, they could also try removing some food by chewing sugar-free gum.

Importance of Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer screening is an examination performed by a dentist to look for signs of cancer or precancerous conditions in the mouth. The goal of oral cancer screening is to identify mouth cancer early when there is a greater chance for a cure. Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS believes oral cancer screenings are a very important part of the visit for the patient. With advances in modern technology, he is now able to pinpoint the start of a potential problem much earlier in its evolution.

Cancer screening trials are meant to show whether early detection (finding cancer before it causes symptoms) decreases a person’s chance of dying from the disease. Although no studies have proved that oral cancer screening saves lives if you are a heavy smoker or heavy drinker you may want to ask whether an oral cancer screening is appropriate for you. Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS is always welcoming new patients and would love to have you as part of the dental family.

Dry Mouth Discomfort

Dry mouth may occur for a variety of reasons. Some of these include a change in medication or a lack of saliva flow from an underlying condition. Also known as xerostomia, dry mouth can be uncomfortable and no matter how much you hydrate, you may not be able to get rid of the feeling. If dry mouth has you concerned, Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS can provide treatment to fix the problem.

Saliva protects the teeth from tooth decay that causes cavities. Saliva also helps wash away food particles that linger on the teeth after a meal. If your mouth isn’t producing enough saliva, you may notice an increase of bad breath, dry throat, or a dry/grooved tongue. Treatment for dry mouth will depend on the cause but may include various methods to restore moisture.

Restore Smiles with Dental Implants

Dr. Eric Meyer, DDS replaces teeth and restores patient smiles with dental implants. Implants are a permanent restorative option for teeth that are missing or have been extracted.  They look and feel like natural teeth, and are the most permanent and efficient means of replacing lost teeth.

Implants are titanium screws inserted into the jaw bone. Over a period of 3-6 months, the jaw bone heals around the implant to become a solid, stable base for the new tooth. During this time a patient is fitted with a temporary crown, and a custom crown is created to match their smile perfectly.

After the jaw bone and gums have healed appropriately, the custom crown is placed in a second appointment. Sometimes, the doctor may need to expose the head of the implant in a second minor surgery.  When everything is healed, the crown will be screwed or cemented to the top of the implant.  When this is complete the tooth looks like part of the natural smile, and with proper care will last for decades!

Smoking with Sleep Apnea

Smoking will exacerbate any respiratory condition, and it is proven to cause snoring and lead to obstructive sleep apnea.  Patients struggling with sleep apnea should see Dr. Eric Meyer, DDS and his staff for evaluation. We can help patients find relief from sleep apnea, but quitting smoking is up to you!

Smoking causes upper airway inflammation, meaning the swelling causes the airway to narrow and disrupts the flow of air to the nasal passage and throat.  This causes snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.  Cigarettes are highly addictive, and some smokers seek treatment for sleep apnea but continue to smoke. Smoking with sleep apnea not only puts more stress on the heart every day, but negates any treatment a sleep apnea patient is undergoing.

Habitual smokers may feel relaxed by one last cigarette for the day, but it actually creates more complications for restful sleep. Smokers can experience nicotine withdrawal overnight, causing more waking up and restlessness.  Quitting smoking cold turkey is very difficult, but even lessening the amount of cigarettes or avoiding smoking at nighttime can help you achieve more restful sleep.  Most smokers cannot quit on their own or on their first attempt, so don’t get discouraged!

Gum Disease and Cirrhosis

Patients suffering from gum disease can find quality care at Dr. Eric Meyer’s Fullerton dental practice. Although many people think of bleeding gums as normal, that is only because gum inflammation is so common. One group that is at greater risk for gum disease is people with cirrhosis. However, new research has shown that periodontal therapy can help mitigate the symptoms of cirrhosis patients in unexpected ways.

Cirrhosis is a disease in which chronic inflammation of the liver causes it to scar over, reducing its effectiveness at filtering harmful chemicals from the bloodstream. People with cirrhosis commonly suffer from cognitive decline and inflammation throughout their bodies. Smoking and alcohol use are two well-known causes of cirrhosis as well as gum disease, so it is unsurprising that the diseases would often occur in the same people. But gum disease is also unusually common in people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which prompted scientists to investigate how one disease impacts the other.

Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University divided people with cirrhosis and gum disease into a control group and a group that got periodontal treatment. They found that in the treated group, cognitive skills improved and bacteria that combat inflammation became more common. Scientists speculated the difference could be caused by people without gum disease being less likely to inhale harmful bacteria. In any case, we’re glad to see more people recognizing the importance of oral health.

National Dental Hygiene Month

We know that patients at Dr. Eric Meyer’s Fullerton dental practice understand the importance of oral hygiene. But are you sure you’re up to speed on your technique? Since October is National Dental Hygiene Month, we thought it would be a good idea to remind patients of brushing and flossing protocol so they will be less likely to develop tooth decay during the holiday season.

Parents should begin brushing their babies’ teeth from the moment the first tooth emerges. With proper care, teeth can last a lifetime, and dentures need to be brushed twice a day, as well. Both manual and electric toothbrushes can be used to prevent tooth decay, but hard bristled toothbrushes are likely to damage the gums and should be avoided. Brushing sessions with a manual toothbrush should last for two minutes each. It is of vital importance to cover every tooth surface and to get close to the gum lines, where calculus accumulates.

Flossing has to be done properly to have any effect. Slide the strand all the way along the side of each tooth and use it to catch plaque with a shoeshine motion. Simply moving floss through the gap between teeth won’t accomplish anything. Another mistake is to not floss the backs of the back molars. Mouthwash can be used in combination with other hygiene products to combat bad breath, but people should brush their tongues and use a tongue scraper every day.

Stop Smoking for Healthier Gums

It’s no secret that smoking is a bad habit for your overall health. Smoking is also one of the leading causes of periodontal disease. If a smoker doesn’t practice proper oral care habits, he or she risks tooth loss in the long run. Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS can give you the tools to stop smoking and improve your oral and periodontal health in the long run.

If you are a tobacco user, the symptoms of periodontal disease will increase. You may notice bleeding gums while brushing, red, swollen, or tender gums, as well as persistent bad breath. Periodontal disease is a serious infection and smokers have twice the risk of developing this condition as nonsmokers. The more cigarettes a person smokes, the greater his or her risk for developing periodontal disease. If you stop smoking, your gums will begin to heal, and you can improve periodontal health with good dental habits.

Drinking Water for Oral Hygiene

Drinking water is important for your health at all ages.  Fullerton Dental has seen adult patients that are guilty of not drinking enough water, so we know it can be tough to monitor if kids are getting enough too.  We want to encourage you and the kids in your family to stay hydrated and healthy!

We all know kids love drinking juice and soda, but we forget that these beverages leave unwanted sugar behind on the teeth.  The type of bacteria that causes cavities feeds on sugar, and produces acid that wears away enamel. Enamel is not replaceable, so it’s important to take care of it even from a young age.  When kids drink juice or soda, it is helpful just to drink some water afterwards to dilute acids and wash away food particles and residue. You and your children should be drinking at least eight 8oz glasses of water each day.  Drinking tap water with fluoride is important to help prevent cavities.  If you’re worried that your children may not be drinking enough water, come see us to discuss tips that might help them drink more!

We love to see good oral hygiene habits formed early, and make lifetime patients out of kids from our community!  To learn more about the services we offer, visit www.fullertondental.com for more information. Retainer Care

Many orthodontic patients require a retainer at the end of orthodontic treatment.  Removable retainers are an easy step to take to preserve a straight smile. Fullerton Dental provides retainers for patients, and caring for your retainer properly is important so that it functions and lasts as long as possible.  A silly but common mistake people make with their retainers is trying to cut corners -- don’t try to clean or brush your retainer while it’s still in your mouth!  You can’t quickly scrub your retainer while brushing your teeth -- the retainer cannot be completely cleaned of debris this way, and toothpaste can also be abrasive to the plastic of the retainer.  Always remove your retainer before cleaning thoroughly with water and your toothbrush, and use a mild dish or hand soap to help clean off debris, never abrasive toothpaste.

You should clean your retainer daily, and also treat it weekly by soaking.  Soaking helps maintain the cleanliness of the retainer and keep it from drying out.  To soak the retainer, dissolve denture cleaning tablets in water or add a little baking soda to water to make a solution.  Storing your retainer properly is also important for its longevity.  Get in the habit of always using and carrying a case.  Many retainers have disappeared after being folded up in napkins!

Endodontics – Apicoectomy

An apicoectomy is performed after an unsuccessful root canal. When an infection will not go away or returns after a root canal has been performed, this procedure is usually necessary. Dr. Eric M Meyer DDS is known for his comprehensive, but gentle approach to dentistry. In most cases, he may suggest a second root canal before an apicoectomy since it is a simpler, less invasive procedure.

An apicoectomy may be needed when an infection develops or persists after root canal treatment or retreatment. In an apicoectomy, the root tip, or apex, is removed along with the infected tissue. A filling is then placed to seal the end of the root. Most apicoectomies take between 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the location of the tooth and the complexity of the root structure. Procedures on front teeth are generally the shortest. Those on lower molars generally take the longest. Before the procedure, Dr. Meyer will provide you with a consultation to see what action best fits your needs.

Oral Care with a Floss Threader

Plaque buildup around braces can be detrimental to your teeth and gums. This is because plaque contains bacteria that eat away at tooth enamel and cause periodontal disease and bad breath. While wearing braces, oral care is extra important because your teeth require extra attention. To make flossing easier with fixed appliances, Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS suggests utilizing floss threaders.

A floss threader is a flexible yet sturdy device and once the ends of the floss are inserted the ends can be easily manipulated to clean under bridgework, behind orthodontic wires, and beneath retainer bars. To use a floss threader, gently thread the floss through the loop of the threader and guide it through the main wire of the fixed appliance before passing it between the two teeth. Then, carefully remove the floss and thread it through the remaining teeth.

Veneers For A Smile Makeover

Patients of Fullerton Dental are always asking our doctors about the latest cosmetic solutions for their teeth.  Some fixes are recommended just to repair damage or just to whiten, but veneers are the best way to give your smile a total makeover. Veneers are thin ceramic shells that bond directly to the surface of your teeth.  This gives you the opportunity to completely change the appearance of your smile and still look natural.

Patients with cosmetic issues like staining, cracked or chipped teeth, and even crooked teeth and small gaps can achieve a dazzling smile with veneers. We can make this happen in two to three visits!  First, your dentist will discuss the shape and look you want for your new smile.  Then an impression of your teeth is taken in order to custom fit the final product to the surfaces of your teeth.  The impression is sent to a dental laboratory where your custom veneers will be fabricated, which may take up to two weeks.  On your final visit, the veneers are bonded to your teeth for you to wear and enjoy!

Pediatric Dentistry

Fullerton Dental is proud to serve the families from our community, and we want them to know it’s just as important for children to have regular dental visits.  A child’s first dental visit should be scheduled when the first baby tooth appears, or around the child’s first birthday.  Baby teeth eventually come out, but their growth and development is important for overall oral health for the child and the development of their adult teeth. Baby teeth should be brushed and cared for like adult teeth, and it’s important to monitor their growth and development.

Missing any tooth for too long can change the development of surrounding teeth and compromise the structure of the jaw bone, but regular checkups can keep a child’s tooth development right on track.  Our dentists are skilled and experienced in administering dental care to children.  If your child has seems nervous about seeing a dentist for the first time, we recommend going through a brushing routine with them at home, and talking about the dental visit before you arrive.  Once we get your child’s oral health off to a great start, we offer a full range of services for child patients including dental cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants.

Reasons for Tooth Extractions

You can trust the professionalism and compassion of Dr. Eric Meyer’s dental team to see you safely through a tooth extraction. But having a tooth removed is a serious undertaking and we think it’s best for our patients to understand in what circumstances we would recommend it.

Modern dentistry provides all sorts of safe, aesthetically pleasing ways of fixing teeth that have been chipped, broken, infected, or eroded. But there still isn’t a good way to repair a tooth that has been cracked down the root. In these cases, we would discuss replacing the tooth with an implant or bridge. There are also cases of pulp infection in which it might be necessary to remove a tooth, although this would usually only be done after an unsuccessful root canal.

Most extractions are recommended for children and teenagers whose teeth are becoming overcrowded. Modern peoples’ jaws usually are not large enough to accommodate wisdom teeth, causing them to get stuck while erupting. It is also common for people to have a set of premolars removed before undergoing orthodontic treatment in order to allow the remaining teeth to be moved into a symmetrical arch. Baby teeth may also be removed if they do not fall out after the adult tooth has come in behind them.

Basics of Bridges

We’re experienced providers of replacement teeth at Dr. Eric Meyer’s Fullerton dental office. When multiple teeth need to be replaced, a dental bridge is one of the patient’s best options. These prosthetics have come a long way in a short time, which is why we want to provide a run-down of their possibilities.

Bridges are linked artificial crowns. A classic dental bridge was one that used two reshaped natural teeth as abutments and had a third crown suspended between it. These kinds of bridges have the advantage of keeping the teeth straight and retaining the natural tooth roots, which are more stable. However, the necessity of reshaping two teeth led dentists to usually only recommend them in cases where there was widespread dental decay or they believed a healthy tooth would need to be replaced, anyway.

Modern bridges can be made as part of removable dentures and skirt around healthy teeth. They have to be reshaped if the teeth shift, but they allow more targeted treatment and easier hygiene. Bridges can also be permanently attached with implants, which will help the jaw bone retain its structure.

White Spot Lesions

Do you know what the first sign of tooth decay is? If not, we at Dr. Eric Meyer’s Fullerton dental office are glad you found us. An incipient dental lesion is characterized by the white spot that develops on tooth enamel and its appearance means that the patient needs to improve their oral hygiene.

Enamel takes on an unnaturally white appearance when it is first exposed to acid. This can be observed in people with chronic acid reflux as well as those going through the early stage of tooth decay. Acid is a by-product of bacteria eating food debris, and it gets stuck in tartar. The enamel in contact with acid first loses minerals, and then develops pits and cavities unless the bacteria, its food source, and the acid are removed.

White spots most commonly form in the area surrounding orthodontic brackets. This can result in hollow rectangular stains on the teeth when they are removed. Good brushing is essential to preventing this, but if it does happen, the teeth may be able to remineralize naturally. Otherwise, we may remineralize them artificially or provide masking treatments, such as bonding or veneers.

Rheumatoid Arthritis and Gum Disease

People with autoimmune disorders need to be especially careful about maintaining their oral health. At the Fullerton dental office of Dr. Eric Meyer, we want our patients to understand their challenges as much as possible, which is why this week’s blog post is dedicated to the connection between gum disease and rheumatoid arthritis.

People with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) experience inflammation in their joints as a result of the body’s immune system turning on a part of the joint called the synovium. The disease also harms the eyes, blood vessels, salivary glands, and, according to new research, the gums. Severe periodontal disease is six times as common in people with RA as in the general population. RA is believed to be largely caused by genetic factors, and scientists have determined that gum tissue has similar DNA and cellular mechanisms in common with synovium.

That periodontal disease is common even in people whose RA is in its early stage implies that the problem isn’t just caused by difficulty holding a toothbrush. However, people with RA should consider electric toothbrushes and other devices which make oral hygiene easier, as well as artificial saliva to compensate for damage to the salivary glands. People with RA still benefit from maintaining regular dental cleanings, and we have an experienced periodontal team dedicated to helping patients with RA.

How to Pick Your Toothpaste

Your toothbrush is a powerful tool used to protect the teeth and gums from inflammation and decay but a toothbrush would be nothing without toothpaste. Brushing with toothpaste using the proper technique works to remove plaque, the sticky harmful bacteria that grow on the teeth and causes cavities, and gum disease. Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS, doesn’t want his patients using whitening toothpaste when they should be using desensitizing toothpaste, so use this guide when shopping for your next tube of toothpaste.

  • Anti-cavity: This type of toothpaste contains fluoride. Fluoride plays an active role in preventing decay, and it actively strengthens tooth enamel.

  • Anti-gingivitis: If you spit blood in the sink, this is an early sign of gingivitis, a mild form of gum disease. Anti-gingivitis toothpaste help reduces oral bacteria and can be very effective at stopping gingivitis in its tracks.

  •  Desensitizing: If you’ve ever bit into an ice cream cone and felt a sharp pain in your tooth’s nerve, this type of toothpaste will provide relief by blocking the tooth’s pain signal to the nerve.

  • Tartar-control: This toothpaste does exactly what it says, however, the best way to remove tartar is by scheduling a professional dental cleaning with one of our doctors.

  • Whitening: This toothpaste contains chemicals that are able to help maintain the natural color of your teeth.

Fixed or Bonded Retainer

If you’ve recently completed orthodontic treatment through Invisalign or traditional braces, you’ll need to protect your investment with a retainer. Dr. Eric M. Meyer, DDS allows patients to choose from a removable retainer or a fixed retainer. A fixed retainer, also known as a bonded retainer, is applied to several teeth to help them stay in place. The type of retainer you choose will depend on your needs and preference.

Though a removable retainer is most common, patients don’t always remember to put them in. Meanwhile, a fixed retainer takes away the thought of remembering or forgetting to wear your retainer because it is bonded in place 24/7. A fixed retainer may take a little extra work to keep clean because it consists of a single wire that stretches across the back of several teeth. If you struggle with cleaning your fixed retainer, Dr. Eric M. Meyer, DDS can help you improve.

Dental Sealants for Pediatric Patients

Dental sealants are a preventative measure used to preserve the teeth and tooth enamel. Almost half of all children and adolescents in the United States have had cavities in their permanent teeth, and Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS can help you protect your child’s teeth with a sealant.

Most tooth decay in children and teenagers occurs on the chewing surfaces of molars, where the pits and grooves tend to trap food and bacteria.  Molars first come in at around 5-7 years of age, with a second set coming in between the ages of 11-14. It is best to have a sealant placed when the molars first come in to ensure they are protected early.

Dental sealants are applied to surfaces of these molars much like paint. The plastic resin fills any pits and grooves on the surface and hardens. Now the surface is protected from bits of food being stuck, so bacteria cannot multiply and cause decay, and tooth enamel is protected from plaque and acids.  Sealants can effectively prevent cavities for up to ten years and can be reapplied of necessary

Importance of Biannual Cleanings

It is recommended by the Academy of General Dentistry to have a dentist or hygienist perform a dental cleaning every six months.  Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS encourages all his patients to maintain a great oral health routine at home, but it is still important to come into the office for regular professional cleanings.  However much you brush and floss, some harmful bacteria grow in your mouth that cause gum disease and can only be removed by a dental professional.

It’s important to see a professional regularly to locate and monitor areas in the mouth that may need special attention, and a dentist can tell you if you may be missing a spot or skipping an important step in your regular oral care routine.

Take Care of Your Toothbrush

It’s important to take care of your teeth, gums, and tongue, but it’s just as important to take care of your toothbrush. Without your toothbrush, you may suffer from periodontal disease, bad breath, mouth sores, and oral discomfort overall. This is why Dr. Eric M. Meyer, DDS, wants patients to clean and replace this optimal oral care instrument when needed.

Each time we use our toothbrush, it becomes filled with bacteria. It is especially important to replace a toothbrush after you’ve contracted a virus, as to not become re-infected. Toothbrushes should always be stored in open space and never in a closed container. A moist environment will cause these bacteria to multiply and may be a cause for concern. You should never share your toothbrush with a loved one, as doing so may increase a person’s risk of infection. A toothbrush should always be replaced every 3-4 months or when bristles become frayed.

Bone Grafting for Dental Implants

A bone graft is the term for harvesting bone material from a healthy location and grafting it to a location that is broken or weakened.  The doctors of Fullerton Dental use this method to strengthen jaw bones in preparation for dental implants.

Missing a tooth for an extended period of time can leave the jaw bone vulnerable and compromise its structure.  When a patient needs an implant for a permanent replacement tooth, a bone graft reinforces the jaw bone so it is strong enough to handle the placement of an implant.

In one procedure, bone material is harvested from a healthy location in the patient’s mouth and grafted to the compromised area of the jaw bone.  This strengthens the weakened bone, and encourages growth of new bone material as it heals.  After the procedure, the bone graft will be monitored over the course of months.  When the jaw bone has strengthened enough to handle the placement of an implant, our doctors can move forward with the patient’s plan of care.

Night Guards for Teeth Grinders

Bruxism is the term for any regular grinding of the teeth or clenching of the jaw.  Chronic teeth grinders often end up needing crowns, bridges, root canals and implants. In severe cases tooth loss can occur, and partial or complete dentures may be needed.  Some teeth grinders only grind their teeth while they sleep at night and may not be aware of it.  Waking up with a stiff or sore jaw could be a sign you are grinding your teeth at night and shouldn’t be ignored.  Nocturnal bruxism can be caused by underlying medical conditions such as sleep apnea. For a proper diagnosis, visit Fullerton Dental for a consultation.

A custom night guard is the best way to protect your teeth from the negative effects of teeth grinding.  We provide patients with custom night guards by first taking an impression of the mouth.  This impression is used to fit a custom product that protects the grinding surfaces of the teeth and aligns the jaw, which also helps improve sleep.  Night guards are durable and with proper care can last 10 years!

Dental Wax for Traditional Braces

If you have a mouth full of wires and brackets, then this must mean that you decided to go the traditional route on your orthodontic journey. Traditional braces are one of the fast methods used to straighten teeth because of the fixed position that the metal is placed in. Though traditional braces straighten teeth in no time, they may cause discomfort to the patient. Fortunately, Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS, has a solution – dental wax.

Dental wax is a safe, non-toxic wax, which is used to protect the lips, cheeks, and gums from the metal in the mouth. Dental wax makes the first few months of orthodontic treatment bearable as your mouth gets used to the equipment inside. If you have pain and irritation that is caused by the sharp end of your appliance, talk to Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS about getting it fixed or simply ask for dental wax the next time you are in the office.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth usually erupt during the ages of 17-22 but the thing is that they don’t always erupt. When wisdom teeth are impacted, the patient may notice symptoms developing over time, which worsen as the wisdom teeth continue to develop. Impacted wisdom teeth lie below the gum line and don’t have room to grow in the mouth. When a patient has impacted wisdom teeth, Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS will likely suggest extraction.

Extracting wisdom teeth does more good than harm. This is because they really don’t serve any purpose in the mouth. Extraction is recommended to avoid throbbing pain in the back of the mouth, swelling around the jaw, tender gums, and/or headaches. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause damage to surrounding teeth, forcing them out of place, and also increase a patient’s risk of developing an infection. If you still have your wisdom teeth intact, and they are causing you discomfort, discuss extraction with Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS.

Fluoride Toothpaste

As part of our patient education program, we at Dr. Eric Meyer’s Fullerton dental office want our patients to understand how to use fluoride toothpaste. A proper tooth brushing is an especially important skill for children to master because it is often one of the first things they do to maintain their own health.

Tooth decay is caused by acidic secretions from bacteria that eat food debris. Fluoride is a mineral that makes tooth enamel more resistant to acid. It is commonly applied to the tops of teeth by dentists and government health initiatives supply it in many places through the drinking water. Fluoride toothpaste also helps to reinforce teeth but works best when the teeth are brushed properly. A session of brushing should last for two full minutes and cover every dental surface.

Toothpaste should be spat instead of swallowed because excessive intake of fluoride can cause enamel discoloration. It should also not be used on oral appliances such as dentures because fluoride can scratch plastic.

Eric M. Meyer, DDS, operates at 2720 North Harbor Blvd, Fullerton, California, 92835. To schedule an appointment, call 714-879-7943 or visit Fullerton Dental and fill out a contact sheet.

Research into Filling Failure

People who need dental fillings are in good hands at Dr. Eric Meyer’s Fullerton office. For more than twenty-five years, we’ve been repairing peoples’ teeth so that they can chew, speak, and smile again comfortably. But we’re always trying to improve, which is why we wanted to pass along new information about dental filling failure.

A filling will usually last for ten years before the bonding holding it in place cracks and needs to be replaced. The new study looked for common factors among people whose fillings did not even last for five years. It turned out that one of the most reliable predictors was smoking. Alcohol use was a common factor among people whose fillings did not even last for two years.

The researchers also found that risk of premature filling failure was higher for people who had a family history of it and that there are certain genes that may make people predisposed to it. It is especially important for these people to maintain regular appointments so the stability of their fillings can be checked. White resin fillings do not have a higher rate of failure than amalgam fillings, so replacing older fillings can also make a patient’s smile more beautiful.

ADA Seal of Acceptance – What It Means

When you shop for oral care products, do you look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance? When a product has been stamped with the American Dental Association seal of approval, this simply means that it has been scientifically evaluated by independent experts to be safe and effective to the patient. Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS encourages patients to use oral care products that advertise that they are from the American Dental Association to guarantee optimal oral health.

Not every dental product possesses the ADA seal of approval, but this doesn’t mean that it won’t get the job done. When a product has the ADA seal of approval, this just means that the company selling the product may or may not have submitted their product for review. There are thousands of products on store shelves from white strips, to flossers, and toothbrushes, that can help protect your mouth and prevent oral diseases.

Are You Flossing Correctly?

The doctors at Fullerton Dental like to see our patients maintain a great oral health routine at home, and the staff here likes to see patients set themselves up for a lifetime of good oral health.  Regular flossing is essential to maintaining oral health and you should floss once a day, either before or after brushing. Remember these tips to help you floss effectively:

  • ·        A strand of dental floss about 18 inches long allows you to wrap the ends of the floss around a finger on each hand. This gives you excellent control over the portion of floss you are using.

  • ·        The proper technique to flossing is sliding the floss between the teeth and rubbing the floss back and forth up until you reach your gums.

  • ·        Pushing at your gums too hard with floss can damage your gum line and isn’t necessary to floss properly. Think of a small swooping motion as you rub the floss up to one gum, then down and back up towards the other.

  • ·        As you move on to the next tooth, adjust the floss to expose an unused portion. Repeat this rubbing motion between each tooth and dispose of the floss once you are finished.

When Your Kid Loses the First Tooth

If your kid is turning into a big kid, losing the first baby tooth is on the horizon.  It’s an exciting sign of growing up, but many kids still feel anxious or uncomfortable dealing with the unfamiliar sensation of a loose tooth.  The doctors at Fullerton Dental want kids and parents to be prepared and understand why this pain occurs so your child can still have a positive tooth loss experience.

Before a baby tooth is lost, it begins to break free of its nerve endings.  This is the natural process that makes the tooth feel loose and wobbly at the gums, and the area will become swollen and red.  It can be painful, and for kids a great way to soothe tooth pain is applying a cold compress to the outside of the mouth in the affected area.  Children may complain that they find it hard to bite or chew with loose or missing teeth.  It’s still important to keep eating healthy while they grow new teeth so encourage soup, pureed fruits, and cooked vegetables.  A few tales of the tooth fairy can usually ease a little pain, too!

Dental Implants

If you have missing teeth and desire a strong, sturdy replacement, Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS has plenty of options to choose from. Dental implants, however, are the most popular option because they last up to ten years with proper care. Not only are dental implants aesthetically appealing, they provide restorative benefits because they feel, fit, and function like a natural tooth.

To receive implants, you must have healthy gums and adequate bone structure to support the implant. Because implants fuse to the jawbone once placed, they provide stable support for artificial teeth if you desire a denture or a dental bridge. Dental implants don’t move, so you never have to worry about dentures sliding forward or coming loose. Dental implants allow you to build your confidence back up and allow you to enjoy everyday life.

Caring for Invisalign

Fullerton Dental offers Invisalign, the clear aligner system that straightens teeth without the metallic look of braces. Another perk of Invisalign clear aligners is that they require less maintenance and won’t prevent you from eating certain foods.  Although you won’t have to make too many changes, there are still guidelines you should follow to wear and care for your aligners!

You should remove Invisalign each time you eat, but if you do eat anything while wearing the aligners make sure to clean them thoroughly afterwards. It is also best to brush and floss your teeth before putting the aligners back in.  Ideally when wearing clear aligners, you would only drink water. Colorful drinks can stain the aligners and too many hot drinks can eventually warp the plastic.  If you do drink anything other than water while wearing the aligners you should rinse them with warm water afterwards.

Cleaning the clear aligners regularly is important for your teeth and straightening treatment.  Clear aligners can become discolored over time without losing their effectiveness, but the color can show on your own teeth and continue to darken.  Invisalign offers its own brand of cleaning solution, and there are several soaking solutions available over the counter, but brushing the aligners is also a sufficient cleaning option.  Do not use toothpaste to brush the aligners because subtle abrasive properties of toothpaste could harm the aligner.  It is best to use mild dish soap and a soft bristle brush to clean the aligners each time you brush your teeth.

Regular Teeth Cleanings

The doctors and staff of Fullerton Dental want you to know that it is recommended by the Academy of General Dentistry recommends to have a dentist or hygienist perform a dental cleaning every six months.  We want patients to maintain a great oral health routine at home, but it is still important to come into the office for regular professional cleanings.

Nocturnal Bruxism

Do you wake up with a sore jaw and have no explanation for it? Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS does because you may be what the dental world calls, a bruxer. A bruxer is someone who falls under the category of nocturnal bruxism, a condition in which a person grinds or clenches his or her teeth during sleep. Although the causes of bruxism are unknown, scientists have linked it to stress and anxiety. Fortunately, there are measures that can be taken to cope as well as treat the problem.

Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS may suggest a night guard as a method of treatment once a diagnosis has been given. This is because the action of grinding and clenching can put unwanted pressure on the jaw and teeth, causing enamel to become worn down and ultra-sensitive. People who suffer from nocturnal bruxism may notice frequent headaches, earaches, and jaw pain.
