Sealants

Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings that are designed to protect the chewing surfaces of children’s back teeth from cavities, or tooth decay. Grooves form on the surfaces of children’s back teeth and create a rough and uneven surface. Dr. Eric Meyer suggests sealants for children with molars developed.

It is recommended that children get sealants as soon as their molars develop to prevent future decay on the teeth. Molars first come in for children around age 6 and the second set of molars come in at age 12. Adding sealants to teeth are quick and painless with a liquid coat put on the teeth and hardening over the teeth for protection.

Good oral hygiene habits start at a young age and sealants combined with brushing, flossing, and regular trips to the dentist, children develop a good foundation and healthy teeth for years to come.

Dr. Eric Meyer of Fullerton Dental offers sealants for children that can be done in one visit.

Dental Sealants for Pediatric Patients

Dental sealants are a preventative measure used to preserve the teeth and tooth enamel. Almost half of all children and adolescents in the United States have had cavities in their permanent teeth, and Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS can help you protect your child’s teeth with a sealant.

Most tooth decay in children and teenagers occurs on the chewing surfaces of molars, where the pits and grooves tend to trap food and bacteria.  Molars first come in at around 5-7 years of age, with a second set coming in between the ages of 11-14. It is best to have a sealant placed when the molars first come in to ensure they are protected early.

Dental sealants are applied to surfaces of these molars much like paint. The plastic resin fills any pits and grooves on the surface and hardens. Now the surface is protected from bits of food being stuck, so bacteria cannot multiply and cause decay, and tooth enamel is protected from plaque and acids.  Sealants can effectively prevent cavities for up to ten years and can be reapplied of necessary

Sealants for Extra-Protecton

Protecting our teeth is what helps us keep them for a lifetime. This is why we brush, floss, and see our dentist regularly. This is also why Dr. Eric M Meyer provides dental sealants to his patients in our Fullerton, CA dental practice. Sealants help block food and debris from the grooves of the molars and protect them from bacteria build-up.

Sealants are great for adult teeth in children between the ages of six and fourteen, in what is known as the cavity-prone years. Sealants are also great for adults who have not had any cavities or fillings in the past. Baby teeth that have deep grooves also benefit from sealant protection, as healthy baby teeth are important for the spacing of adult teeth.

Sealants are placed after the tooth is cleaned. An acid solution is placed onto the tooth where the sealant is to be placed. The acid roughens up the surface of the tooth which creates a stronger bond for the sealant. The teeth are rinsed and dried before the sealant is placed. The plastic material is then painted into the grooves of the molar and allowed to harden. The teeth are now protected for up to ten years. If additional protection is needed, the sealants may be reapplied.

Sealants protect vulnerable teeth from decay when a toothbrush may not reach the area. To find out if sealants may be right for you or someone you know, schedule a consultation at our Fullerton, CA office by calling Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS or visiting our website, www.fullertondental.com

Sealants from Dr. Eric Meyer

Although brushing and flossing are effective cleaning techniques for removing food particles and plaque from the smooth surfaces of our teeth, sometimes these methods are ineffective at thoroughly cleaning the nooks and crannies in our premolars and molars. Because molars are the hardest to clean and the teeth most used in the chewing process, they are the most susceptible to cavities and decay. This is why Dr. Eric Meyer recommends sealants soon after molars emerge when children are between the ages of 6 and 14.

Dental sealants are a thin, plastic coating applied to the chewing surfaces of the molars to prevent cavities and tooth decay. The sealant is applied by Dr. Meyer, who first roughens the surface of the molar with acid and then paints on the sealant. The sealant bonds into the depressions and grooves of the teeth, hardening and forming a shield over the enamel to protect it for approximately 10 years.

Sealants are normally applied to children’s molars because their teeth are especially susceptible to cavities. However, sometimes they are applied to adult molars if they have hard-to-clean grooves that are causing cavities.
