Importance of Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer screening is an examination performed by a dentist to look for signs of cancer or precancerous conditions in the mouth. The goal of oral cancer screening is to identify mouth cancer early when there is a greater chance for a cure. Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS believes oral cancer screenings are a very important part of the visit for the patient. With advances in modern technology, he is now able to pinpoint the start of a potential problem much earlier in its evolution.

Cancer screening trials are meant to show whether early detection (finding cancer before it causes symptoms) decreases a person’s chance of dying from the disease. Although no studies have proved that oral cancer screening saves lives if you are a heavy smoker or heavy drinker you may want to ask whether an oral cancer screening is appropriate for you. Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS is always welcoming new patients and would love to have you as part of the dental family.

Hookah Tobacco and Teeth

It’s no secret that smoking is one of the worst things we can do for our oral and overall health. Though smoking hookah pipes claim to be much healthier than smoking cigarettes, Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS wants to assure you that this isn’t true. Smoking a hookah is equivalent to smoking about 100 cigarettes, allow us to explain more about why you should avoid the hookah and save your teeth.

A hookah is a type of water pipe with a smoke chamber, a bowl, a pipe and a hose.  It’s gained popularity in major cities all over the world. Many people are misled that in believing that water from these pipes filters out the toxins and reduces nicotine. This is not true because smoking hookah bears the same health risks that exist with cigarette smoking. Oral health risks such as oral cancer and gum disease increase, as well as developing lung cancer and heart disease.

Importance of Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer is divided into stages – it can either occur in the oral cavity (lips, cheeks, gums, and tongue) or in the back of the throat where the tonsils and larynx lie. Together, these cancers account for 2.9% cancers in the United States. Fortunately, Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS has the tools to combat oral cancer and it begins with oral cancer screening.

Smoking and excessive drinking, especially in combination can significantly increase a patient’s risk for developing oral cancer. Prevention is key, so if you can cut out smoking completely your overall health and your mouth will thank you. During the oral cancer screening, Dr. Eric M Meyer will perform a thorough examination of the oral cavity. This allows him to search for cancer symptoms or precancerous lesions in the mouth. The purpose of an oral cancer screening is to identify mouth cancer early when there is a greater chance for a cure.

Screening for Oral Cancer

Being screened for oral cancer is an important part of maintaining your oral health and should be a regular part of your oral hygiene routine. At our practice in Fullerton, CA, we take oral cancer seriously and are dedicated to keeping our patients safe with thorough screenings.

While everyone is at risk for oral cancer, certain factors can increase your risk in developing the disease. Lifestyle choices, such as heavy drinking or smoking, can greatly affect the health of tissues in the mouth, so it is especially important for you to receive regular screenings if you partake in these activities. If oral abnormalities are caught early, it will not only expand your treatment options, including less invasive and less radical treatments, but it will also increase your chances of beating oral cancer.

Screening for oral cancer can be done during routine checkups by Dr. Eric Meyer, who uses ultraviolet light to help him spot abnormal tissue in your mouth. Abnormal tissue can then be tested to see if it is cancerous or not.

Oral cancer is a serious issue, and at our office, we strive to protect all our patients. To schedule an appointment, call 714-879-7943. For more information, visit www.FullertonDental.com.
