Dangers of Habitual Snoring

Occasional snoring isn’t serious, but when a person is constantly getting kicked in the middle of the night for disrupting their partner's sleep, then it becomes a problem. Habitual snorers not only disrupt the sleep of their partner, they risk developing cardiovascular disease, falling asleep at the wheel due to constant fatigue, and increase their chances of developing sleep apnea. If you don’t feel like you are getting the quality of sleep that you deserve, schedule a consultation with Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS.

Sleep apnea creates several problems, including interruptions of breathing during the night. When the airway is physically obstructed, this can cause a delay in breathing during sleep or it can make a person stop breathing altogether. Sleep apnea additionally puts a strain on the heart because the lack of sleep can result in higher blood pressure and a higher risk of heart attack and stroke. If you experience drowsiness during the day, it may be time to discuss your treatment options.

If you have questions or concerns regarding sleep apnea, please give us a call. To learn more about the services provided at the practice, visit www.fullertondental.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS, in Fullerton CA, call 714-879-7943.

Foods for Optimal Oral Health

Prevention is important when it comes to protecting tooth enamel, periodontal health, and the overall health of your mouth. If you’ve ever heard the phrase, “You are what you eat” that is partially true, because what you eat reflects your oral health status. If you have a diet that is heavy in sugar and carbohydrates, Dr. Eric M Meyer DDS, hopes that your oral hygiene routine is up to par. If it’s not, then it’s time to put these foods on your plate.

Regular brushing and flossing help eliminate sugars that are in the foods and beverages that we eat. A healthy diet consists of eating foods from each of the five food groups. Also known as “functional foods” fruits and vegetables that have high water content keep the mouth clean and promote oral health. Dairy products such as cheese, sugar-free yogurt, and milk increase saliva production which help fight decay. Additionally, foods containing calcium such as almonds and leafy greens keep tooth enamel strong and healthy.

Proper Use of Mouthguards

An athlete’s mouth can take quite a battering during a match. When properly used, a mouthguard can make save someone’s teeth from traumatic injury, but many athletes opt not to use one. Their reasons for doing so are usually based on misconceptions which, at Dr. Eric Meyer’s Fullerton dental office, we want to correct.

A common complaint about mouthguards is that they are excessively large, covering interior parts of the mouth that don’t need protection at the cost of gagging and difficulty speaking and breathing. This can happen if a mouthguard is not fitted properly, but a custom-fitted mouthguard would not cause these problems. Boil-and-bite mouthguards available at sports stores and through online vendors work alright, but the best option is a mouthguard made from a scan or impression of the athlete’s teeth.

Some people also avoid mouthguards because they consider them unhygienic. This depends on how often a mouthguard is cleaned. Ideally, it would be brushed after every use (with a different toothbrush than the wearer uses on their teeth). Like retainers and dentures, mouthguards should only be rinsed with cool or room-temperature water, for fear of warping them, and should be replaced by a professional if they lose their shape. Unlike dentures, mouthguards should be allowed to dry when not in use.

Tooth Decay in Seniors

At Dr. Eric Meyer’s Fullerton dental office, we provide preventive care to ensure seniors have healthy, comfortable, good-looking teeth. Many people are aware that children are at risk for tooth decay and cavity formation, but they may not be aware that the risk returns late in life. There are a number of reasons for this which seniors and those caring for them need to look out for.

Declining dexterity and motor control can make oral hygiene difficult. Declining vision may also make it more difficult to target problem oral areas, but seniors are also likelier to simply forget to keep up their brushing. They may also have changed their diets to include softer foods with higher sugar contents that are likelier to get stuck between their teeth and feed more bacteria. Seniors also often make fewer trips to the dentist due to loss of employment benefits and are on medications that compromise their oral health, such as those which cause dry mouth.

On top of these complications, most seniors did not have access to fluoridated water growing up, making them more vulnerable to any adverse change in oral health. According to the most recent information from the Centers for Disease Control, one in five had untreated tooth decay. However, with fluoridated toothpaste and other products we can recommend for help with motor control problems and dry mouth, seniors can regain and even improve their oral health.

Soft Tissue Grafting

Soft tissue grafting is a simple procedure that dentists use to help patients overcome different issues with their teeth and gums.  Lacking gum tissue in certain areas can cause extra sensitivity, and if the gum line is very low the patient is at risk for infection.  Less gum tissue can also cause a smile to have the look of elongated teeth.  Depending on the case, a patient may need one small gum graft or enough for a whole gum line.

To place a soft tissue graft, a dentist harvests healthy tissue from the roof of the patient’s mouth. Tissue can also be taken from the gums if the patient has excess gum tissue anywhere.  The grafts are then placed where gum tissue is lacking or has receded.  Gums will heal relatively quickly, and the grafts encourage growth of new tissue as they heal.  The result is an even ratio of tooth to gums throughout the whole mouth.  Don’t let your gums keep you from your best dental health, contact us if you think a soft tissue graft could help you.

Crowns Save Teeth

Crowns are a common restorative option that the doctors and staff of Fullerton dental have used to help save many teeth.  Crowns are ideal for teeth with a significant amount of decay or that have been chipped. A crown fits over the damaged tooth like a little cap and covers it completely, acting as a replacement.  The safe and non-invasive procedure of installing a crown can be completed in as little as two appointments.

The process begins with preparing the tooth by removing any decay, and to ensure a great fit for the crown your dentist may need to contour the tooth that remains.  When the tooth has been prepared, an impression of the mouth is taken and sent to a dental laboratory for the custom product to be fabricated.  Ask us about temporary options to wear while your new crown is being made.  Once your custom crown is made, the crown will be cemented into place by your dentist at a second appointment.

Mini Dental Implants

The doctors at Fullerton Dental are excited to offer the latest dental products, and want patients to know that mini dental implants make treatments possible for patients who could not benefit from traditional implants.  Mini dental implants are about half the diameter of a traditional dental implant. This allows them to be used in narrow spaces where regular implants were not an option.  Mini implants are used both to anchor restorations and aid in installing a full set of dentures.

The small size of these new implants makes it possible for them to be inserted right through the gums into the bone. No incision means no stitches, and eliminates the need for a recovery period. This means the restoration or denture can usually be placed right away or shortly after.  Mini implants can also be used to install a full upper or lower denture. Between 4 and 6 mini implants are placed along the gum line to serve as the base for securing the denture. Any of our doctors can tell you a mini implant is the right solution for you.

Invisalign

Invisalign is the invisible alternative to traditional braces for adults and teens, and the doctors at Fullerton Dental have seen Invisalign transform smiles for patients of all ages.  Invisalign is recommended to correct mild to moderate spacing or crowding of the teeth.  Any severe misalignment may require another method, so always consult your dentist.  An Invisalign treatment plan consists of a series of clear, removable plastic aligners that are custom-made for your teeth, and a typical treatment plan can be completed in less than a year.

To straighten your teeth with Invisalign, we begin with an examination. A dentist can determine if Invisalign will be effective in achieving the smile you want. Impressions or scans of your teeth are used to create a full set of aligners customized to your teeth and your treatment plan. Each set of aligners is worn for about two weeks, depending on your individual treatment plan.  The aligners should be worn at least 20 hours a day. You should remove the aligners to eat, and to brush and floss.

Causes of Bleeding Gums

With expert periodontists on staff at Dr. Eric Meyer’s Fullerton office, there’s no need for patients to tolerate bleeding gums. Although a bit of blood seeping out during brushing and flossing may be a normal sight to some people, it’s a sign of a problem which may require a dentist’s attention.

Bleeding gums are generally due to the accumulation of plaque and tartar on patients’ teeth near the gum line. The bleeding is caused by irritation to soft tissue by acid stuck to the tartar. Tartar should only be scraped away by a dental hygienist, but patients may be able to prevent further bleeding or plaque accumulation by brushing for a full two minutes with fluoridated toothpaste twice each day, which is recommended for everybody. However, it is possible that the toothbrush is contributing to the problem if its bristles are too hard; only soft-bristled toothbrushes should be used on teeth.

Gingivitis is especially likely to develop if the patient suffers from dry mouth. There are medications which can cause this, as well as ones which are blood thinners, which weakens gum tissue. Smokers are also at increased risk for bleeding gums, as are pregnant women.

Pain Around Fillings

At Dr. Eric Meyer’s Fullerton dental office, bonding and white fillings have saved countless people’s teeth. When patients suffer from caries, our skilled dentists remove the decayed material and seal over the gap so that bacteria can’t recolonize it. This may cause sensitivity, but discomfort shouldn’t last for more than about two days. If it does, or discomfort returns, the patient should schedule an appointment right away.

A poorly-made filling may be “high,” which means it is misshapen in a way that causes it to prevent the patient from biting down. It also may not be large enough to fill the gap created by the drilling away of decayed material, which would allow bacteria back in. This typically happens if the filling or sealant was made from a material that shrinks. We don’t expect that to happen at our office, but even the best fillings and bonding will break after about ten years. If an old filling is becoming painful, it could be because the seal is cracking. When this happens, the filling must be replaced. Of course, it is important to replace a filling sooner if it has already come loose, or else more drilling and a larger restoration may be required.

Mouth Ulcers

When patients at Dr. Eric Meyer’s Fullerton office are suffering from mouth ulcers, they can count on us to provide treatment and information. Although ulcers usually go away on their own after about a month, the irritation they cause can be difficult to manage without proper guidance and patients will want to know what caused their malady.

Cold sores are a common type of mouth ulcer caused by the herpes simplex virus-1. This virus spreads very easily; most people get it as children by sharing cups and straws. Although it never leaves its host, the virus can only spread during a cold sore outbreak, so people experiencing one should be careful not to touch their eyes after touching their mouths.

Cankers are large white ulcers that most often are found in teenagers. Although some studies link them to stress, they have no firmly established cause. Other ulcers can be caused by misalignments in the patient’s bite causing their teeth to injure the soft tissue lining inside their mouths. This kind of ulcer would reoccur until the teeth’s alignment can be corrected, but other types of ulcers can be treated with topical creams and antibiotics.

Back to School Cleaning

As children go back to school, too many of them will be troubled by tooth aches. The consequences of untreated tooth decay can be devastating for a child’s academic achievement and social development, as well as their health, which is why there’s no better time than now to schedule an appointment with Dr. Meyer’s office.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s most recent study showed that 20% of preteens and 13% of teens have untreated dental decay. Children are the age group most likely to get caries, and decay can delay their speech development and cause them to lose sleep and avoid eating, making them fatigued, irritable, and unable to concentrate. As decay progresses, it causes the gums to become inflamed and bleed and can spread to the pulp of the tooth, at which point it would require a root canal to remove.

Biannual check-ups are intended to help us catch decay before it progresses enough to cause major problems. The less decay is present, the less intrusive a restorative technique is necessary. Dr. Meyer and his associates can also use the check-up as an opportunity to provide the child with sealants, making their teeth more resistant to decay throughout the academic year.

Breastfeeding and Your Baby’s Teeth

Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS understands that breastfeeding is a very special time for a new mother. The act itself has many nutritional benefits for a child as breast milk helps your baby fight off viruses and bacteria and lowers your baby’s risk of developing asthma or allergies. Breastmilk is not only beneficial to your child’s overall health; it can also be very helpful in developing a child’s smile.

Breastfeeding reduces the risk of baby bottle tooth decay – a condition that is caused by the frequent and long-term exposure of a child’s teeth to liquids containing sugars. This is because breast milk contains a unique blend of nutrients, live organisms, antibodies, and enzymes that formula cannot duplicate. Additionally, because the act of breastfeeding requires a baby to use their jaw and tongue in a sophisticated manner, breastfeeding is critical for a baby’s jaw, dental, and airway development.

Hookah Tobacco and Teeth

It’s no secret that smoking is one of the worst things we can do for our oral and overall health. Though smoking hookah pipes claim to be much healthier than smoking cigarettes, Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS wants to assure you that this isn’t true. Smoking a hookah is equivalent to smoking about 100 cigarettes, allow us to explain more about why you should avoid the hookah and save your teeth.

A hookah is a type of water pipe with a smoke chamber, a bowl, a pipe and a hose.  It’s gained popularity in major cities all over the world. Many people are misled that in believing that water from these pipes filters out the toxins and reduces nicotine. This is not true because smoking hookah bears the same health risks that exist with cigarette smoking. Oral health risks such as oral cancer and gum disease increase, as well as developing lung cancer and heart disease.

Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is the term for removing excess gum tissue from the teeth and sculpting the gum line.  At Fullerton Dental, dentists perform this procedure to expose more of a tooth, and it can be done for function or aesthetics.  Sometimes gum tissue is removed so there is room to affix a restoration like a crown to the tooth, and other patients request it to correct a gummy smile. We offer crown lengthening for cosmetics so that any patient can have their perfect smile.

Whichever reason patients are in need of crown lengthening, it is a simple in office procedure.  A local anesthetic is used while your dentist removes excess gum tissue with either a scalpel or laser tools.  The result is a visually pleasing ratio of teeth to gums that creates an even smile!  If you think your smile would benefit from crown lengthening, please contact us.

Apicoectomy

The doctors at Fullerton Dental perform many root canals to save and repair teeth that are badly damaged or infected.  During a root canal, we remove any inflamed or infected tissue, and thoroughly clean the root canal system.  In most root canal cases, the tooth heals and doesn’t require further treatment. When an infection won’t go away or the canals become re-infected, our doctors can perform an apicoectomy.

An apicoectomy is performed to remove damaged tissue and seal a tooth’s root from any further infections.  The procedure involves a small incision in the gums, followed by removal of any infected tissue and finally the end of the root tip itself.  A root-end filling is placed there to act as a seal, preventing reinfection. The gum is sutured, and most patients only feel slight discomfort or swelling during healing.  If you have a tooth infection lingering after a root canal gone wrong, please contact us to discuss your treatment options.

Root Tip Infections

A lot of studies have come out recently linking dental infections with heart disease and other illnesses, so we thought this would be a good time to educate patients about root tip infections. This type of infection can be extremely dangerous but often goes undetected until patients develop what is called a periapical abscess, which is painful and bad-smelling.

When a tooth is cracked, bacteria may enter the pulp chamber and cause inflammation. Pus, made up of bacteria and dead tissue, accumulates at the tip of the tooth root, and the body may form an abscess, a pocket made of soft tissue, to contain it. However, the infection could still spread, causing loss of bone matter and eventually entering the blood stream. The pain from an abscessed tooth could also spread and come to encompass a large part of the face.

Treating a periapical abscess requires that it be drained and the patient undergo a root canal. They may also need an apicoectomy, which is an operation during which the root tip is removed and replaced. But imaging tests can help us to stop a root tip infection before it gets to that point, and spare the patient a lot of pain and expense.

Loose Permanent Teeth

A loose permanent tooth is a big problem, so if it ever happens to you, we hope you’ll know to come to Dr. Eric Meyer’s Fullerton dental office for help. Assuming the patient has not suffered a blow to the face, loose teeth are usually caused by advanced periodontal disease, and intervention by a dentist is necessary to save the teeth and the patient’s overall health.

The scientific term for damage to the teeth from severe periodontal disease is “secondary occlusal trauma.” (When tooth damage occurs without an infection, it is called “primary occlusal trauma.”) Periodontal disease doesn’t just destroy gum tissue; it also causes the jaw bone to lose mass. As the bone and gum ligaments recede, the teeth can wriggle around. If a patient loses their back teeth and tries to compensate by chewing with their front teeth, they are likely to give themselves primary occlusal trauma, as well.

We have several dentists on staff with advanced training in controlling periodontal disease. When the infection has been curbed, it may be necessary to rebuild the jaw bone with a bone graft. During treatments, a splint will likely be used to distribute bite force among the teeth more evenly, but how long patients will need the splint for will vary on a case-by-case basis.

Oral Hygiene with Bridges

Getting a fixed bridge does wonders for a patient’s bite and smile, but it requires a few changes to their hygiene routine. Since we value preventive care so highly at Dr. Eric Meyer’s Fullerton practice, we want to ensure that our patients with bridges know about all the tools available to them.

The gap between the bridge and the gum needs to be flossed. One way to get floss under the gap and loop it back around is with a threader, which is like a soft sewing needle and a familiar tool to anyone who has worn braces. There are also specialty brands of floss which have stiffened ends for sliding under bridges

Implant-supported bridges tend to have larger spaces beneath them due to implants being narrower than tooth roots. This may allow patients to remove debris with a proxy brush, which is also known as a Christmas tree brush. Proxy brushes can be mounted on normal-sized toothbrush handles. Some manufacturers of electric toothbrushes and water picks are now making adjustable heads for their products, as well, which are designed to be used on implants and the structures they support.

Intrinsic Stains

Did you know that root canals can be an important cosmetic procedure? Stains can be both extrinsic and intrinsic to a tooth, meaning they can affect the outer as well as the inner layers. At Dr. Eric Meyer’s Fullerton dental office, we offer several means of restoring teeth to whiteness, but for some intrinsic stains, a root canal is necessary.

Extrinsic stains are generally caused by repeated exposure to dark liquids such as coffee or red wine, or by smoke and tar. They can usually be fixed with bleaching. Intrinsic stains affect the dental pulp. They could be due to the tooth having been exposed to an excessive amount of fluoride or tetracycline antibiotics while it was developing, or by inflammation. Although an intrinsic stain can be covered with a veneer, inflamed pulp presents a health concern and should not be swept under the rug.

Although inflammation is part of the body’s immune response, the body does a poor job at fighting off tooth infections on its own and a root canal will probably be necessary. Typically, a root canal ends with the tooth being filled and sealed. But to reverse cosmetic damage, an entire new crown may be necessary.

Drink Water for Your Oral Health

Water is vital for us to survive, but did you know how much it plays a role in oral health? Those sugary beverages we consume may be tasty to wash down a meal with but they wreak havoc on the tooth enamel and gums. Water cleans your mouth with every sip, which is why Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS encourages all of his patients to stay hydrated if they want a healthy smile.

Drinking water that contains fluoride, also known as “nature’s cavity fighter” is one of the easiest things we can do to fight against cavities. This is because water washes away food particles that harvest bacteria. Though water dilutes the acids produced by these bacteria, you’ll still need to practice proper oral hygiene if you want to maintain a healthy smile. Aim for brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day.

If you have questions regarding how diet affects dental health, please give us a call. To learn more about the services provided at the practice, visit www.fullertondental.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS, in Fullerton CA, call 714-879-7943.

Importance of Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer is divided into stages – it can either occur in the oral cavity (lips, cheeks, gums, and tongue) or in the back of the throat where the tonsils and larynx lie. Together, these cancers account for 2.9% cancers in the United States. Fortunately, Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS has the tools to combat oral cancer and it begins with oral cancer screening.

Smoking and excessive drinking, especially in combination can significantly increase a patient’s risk for developing oral cancer. Prevention is key, so if you can cut out smoking completely your overall health and your mouth will thank you. During the oral cancer screening, Dr. Eric M Meyer will perform a thorough examination of the oral cavity. This allows him to search for cancer symptoms or precancerous lesions in the mouth. The purpose of an oral cancer screening is to identify mouth cancer early when there is a greater chance for a cure.

If you have further questions regarding oral cancer screening, please give us a call. To learn more about the services provided at the practice, visit www.fullertondental.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS, in Fullerton CA, call 714-879-7943.

Oral Piercings and Teeth

Issues and complications with oral piercings can begin immediately after the piercing procedure. These can include swelling, infection, and discomfort. Oral piercings may look cool, but they can sometimes do more harm than good. Though Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS doesn’t want to hinder you from self-expression, he wants to explain the possible consequences that are associated with oral piercings.

Your mouth is full of bacteria and whether or not these bacteria decide to cooperate with a new piercing depends on the patient. For instance, if your body rejects an oral piercing such as a tongue ring, your tongue could swell so much that it blocks your airway. In some cases, the jewelry alone could crack or chip a tooth. It’s important to remove jewelry as it becomes a problem. If you notice signs or symptoms of an oral infection, contact us immediately to discuss your treatment options.

If you have questions or concerns about oral piercings and how they affect your oral health, please give us a call. Periodontitis

Periodontitis is a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone that supports your teeth. If you’ve been told by Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS that you have gingivitis, periodontitis is what will happen if you’re gingivitis isn’t treated. Gingivitis is a mild inflammation of the gums, while periodontitis has the ability to result in tooth loss. Overall, periodontal disease is preventable and we encourage you to visit our office twice a year to keep your gums in tip-top shape.

With periodontitis, the gum and bone pull away from the teeth, forming large pockets. Bacteria such as plaque can linger in these pockets and infect the area. To avoid plaque from attacking your teeth, you simply have to maintain a proper oral hygiene routine. We recommend brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day. If you have swollen, puffy gums, and/or gums that bleed easily or are tender to touch, you should visit us for a dental exam as soon as possible. The sooner you seek care, the more likely you are to prevent invasive dental procedures in the future.

Dry Sockets

At Dr. Eric Meyer’s Fullerton dental practice, we have several doctors who are experienced in all manners of saving teeth. But when extractions are inevitable, we want our patients to know they can rely on us if complications from dry sockets arise during their recoveries.

We always ask about patients’ medications before performing surgeries. This is partly because medications which prevent blood clotting put that patient at a high risk of developing a dry socket. Blood clots protect an empty socket from dryness and infection during the time it takes for a socket to close. Patients also are advised not to sip through straws in the days following an extraction, as the suction may tear a clot loose.

If the patient’s bleeding never stops or they are still in severe pain two days after the extraction, we will see them during an emergency appointment. We have tools for cleaning sockets and medicated wound dressings for re-moisturizing them and fighting infection. We may also prescribe painkillers and will monitor the patient’s recovery while changing the dressings every few days. Dry sockets are most common following extractions which required incisions and sutures, and the appointment to remove the sutures provides us with a chance to ensure all is well.

Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

Childhood is the period in life when people are most vulnerable to cavities, and very young children often experience what dentists call Baby Bottle Tooth Decay. We want the families visiting Dr. Meyer’s Fullerton office to understand this problem so they can better care for their children’s oral hygiene.

When babies feed from bottles, sugar tends to accumulate on the fronts of their incisors. Although milk and formula may not be particularly sugary compared to juice, if the sugar they do contain remains stuck to babies’ teeth for too long, the teeth will be at risk for decay. Unfortunately, the sugar often does remain when babies are given bottles of milk or formula to swig from for hours but have no opportunity to rinse their mouths by drinking water. Older children and adults are also at a higher risk for tooth decay if they snack throughout the day, but they can choose when to brush their teeth or chew sugar-free gum, whereas babies are dependent on others to brush their teeth for them.

The easiest way to avoid Baby Bottle Tooth Decay is to limit the amount of time babies are allowed to keep bottles. But for nutritional as well as dental reasons, children should transfer to drinking from cups around the time of their first birthdays.

Brush Your Teeth Before Bed!

It’s nighttime and you want to pour yourself into bed after a long day. Understandable, but don’t forget to brush your teeth first. A nighttime oral hygiene routine is important to implement into your schedule because while we’re sleeping, we’re not swallowing, so the bacteria increases until the morning. The three basic steps to nighttime hygiene are brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash. Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS wants to tell you more about why you should brush before bed.

When you hit the hay without brushing your teeth, plaque turns into tartar that can only be removed by a dental hygienist. Left untreated for too long, tartar buildup can lead to gingivitis, which is the first stage of periodontal disease.  Though gingivitis is reversible, we’d rather you prevent this condition altogether. If you’re too exhausted to brush before bed, Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS encourages you to keep a toothbrush in the drawer of your nightstand. A simple dry brush is better than not brushing at all, but be sure to brush those pearly whites the minute you wake up.

Sugar and Your Smile

There’s a sweet tooth that lies in most of us, but it can lead us down a dangerous road if we don’t take care of our teeth. Too much sugar can lead to tooth decay, but few are aware of how it happens. Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS would like to explain the chain of events that occur after you reach for that extra piece of cake or that sugary beverage that you’ve been craving.

Your teeth are frequently under attack by acid and bacteria, but there are good bacteria and bad. Harmful oral bacteria feed on the sugars you eat to create acids that destroy the tooth enamel through a process called demineralization. This process occurs when a patient indulges in soda, energy drinks, and starchy snacks. Fortunately, the natural process of remineralization replaces the good minerals to strengthen your teeth all over again. Fluoride is your friend in this case because it not only prevents tooth decay, but it can reverse it in the early stages. Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS can discuss fluoride treatment with you and as always he encourages you to brush at least twice a day and floss once a day to keep your smile healthy.

ZOOM! Whitening

Dr. Eric M. Meyer and his staff receive many inquiries from patients just like you about how they can whiten their teeth.  We offer ZOOM! Whitening to patients looking to treat stained teeth or whiten their natural teeth.  When surface stains penetrate the tooth enamel they can darken the color of the dentin, the hard tissue layer of your tooth under the enamel. Once the dentin is darkened, it can make the whole tooth appear yellow.  Successful whitening systems go below the tooth enamel to reach the dentin.

ZOOM! Whitening combines whitening gel with an activator light to penetrate the enamel and break up stains at the dentin layer. Once the gel is applied to your teeth, the light activates and accelerates the whitening process.  When the chemical reaction lightens the color of the dentin, the whole tooth is free to become whiter.  After a consultation, we can tell you based on the level of staining on your teeth what results you can expect from ZOOM!  Patients have left the office after an hour treatment with a smile up to ten shades whiter!

For more information on this professional whitening system that delivers dramatic results, visit www.fullertondental.com. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Eric M. Meyer, DDS, in Fullerton CA, call 714-879-7943.

Scaling and Root Planing

Gum disease in the most advanced stages can lead to gum recession and even tooth loss.  Fullerton, CA dentist Dr. Eric M. Meyer wants to help you make sure it never gets to that stage.  When sticky bacteria called plaque builds up on a tooth, the gum starts to pull away from the tooth and form a pocket around the buildup.  This only leads to more gum recession.  Scaling and root planing are used to treat this buildup and prevent advanced stages of gum disease.

Scaling and root planing are two parts of a deep cleaning procedure your dentist can perform to help repair your gums.  Scaling is the process of removing sticky plaque from the surface of your teeth all the way down to your gums. Root planing involves minor contouring to smooth the surface of a tooth near the root.  Once the plaque has been removed and the tooth root has been smoothed, the gums that had pulled away have a clean smooth surface to reattach to.   Local anesthetic is used during this procedure, and your dentist may recommend completing the treatment over a series of appointments

Water Flossing

Traditional flossing removes food particles between your teeth and under the gum line, so how does water flossing compare? Though water flossing is another way to clean teeth, this method involves using a hand-held device. Water flossing can be ideal for people who have trouble flossing by hand and Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS wants patients to know that if they are going to invest in a water flosser it should have the ADA Seal of Acceptance.

Even if you’ve been water flossing for years, nothing beats good old dental floss. Water flossers have been tested to be safe and effective for removing plaque, and are helpful if you’ve had dental work done, such as bridges or braces. Depending on which flossing technique you decide to use, keep in mind that cleaning between your teeth should never be painful. Talk to Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS and discuss which dental cleaner is best for you.

DIY Whitening Facts and Fiction

It’s no secret that we all desire a brighter smile, but with DIY whitening concoctions on the rise, it’s important to know how safe they are. Just because the approach may be natural, doesn’t mean that it’s safe. This is why Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS is here to explain the facts and fictions of DIY teeth whitening and encourages you to schedule a cleaning to achieve an optimal healthy smile.

Spices, oils, charcoal, all of these things are being recommended to bring a shine back to your smile when in reality these materials can actually be abrasive to your teeth. Using materials that are too abrasive on your teeth can make them appear more yellow and increase tooth sensitivity. Before resorting to DIY techniques, you should always practice proper oral hygiene habits, first. Be sure that you are brushing your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes, use whitening toothpaste with the ADA Seal of Acceptance and always visit Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS for dental checkups twice a year.

Sealants

Dental sealants are a preventative measure used to preserve the teeth and tooth enamel. Almost half of all children and adolescents in the United States have had cavities in their permanent teeth, and Dr. Eric Meyer wants to help you protect your child’s teeth with a sealant. Most tooth decay in children and teenagers occurs on the chewing surfaces of molars, where the pits and grooves tend to trap food and bacteria.  Molars first come in at around 5-7 years of age, with a second set coming in between the ages of 11-14. It is best to have a sealant placed when the molars first come in to ensure they are protected early.

Dental sealants are applied to surfaces of these back teeth much like paint. The plastic resin fills any pits and grooves on the surface and hardens. Now the surface is protected from bits of food being stuck, so bacteria cannot multiply and cause decay.  Sealants also protect tooth enamel from plaque and acids, and can effectively prevent cavities for up to ten years. If you think anyone in your family would benefit from a dental sealant, our dentists can determine if you are eligible candidates and start preserving your teeth.

Sedation for Dental Anxiety

Dr. Eric Meyer knows far too many patients put off dental work because of an anxiety or fear about the procedure. Some patients have had painful or traumatic dental appointments in the past that give them fear, and others have sensitive teeth or a sensitive gag reflex that has always made dental work dreadful. Anxieties like these are no reason to put yourself at risk by leaving dental issues untreated.

We strive to make the process as comfortable as possible for each patient. In addition to using local anesthetic in the area of a procedure, we are equipped to offer the following options for sedation:

  • ·        Nitrous Oxide, also called laughing gas, is inhaled by the patient and causes a sleepy euphoria before the patient drifts off

  • ·        Oral Conscious Sedation, or taking a sedative orally before the procedure, keeps the patient awake but they remain completely relaxed and experience no pain

  • ·        Anxiolysis, also administered by taking a pill orally, is a lighter sedative recommended for moderately anxious patients

  • ·        IV Sedation delivers medicine straight into your blood stream to work quickly, and the level of sedation can be adjusted during the procedure

Anyone experience anxiety-free dental appointments with our help. Sedation also presents an opportunity to condense complex procedures that would typically take multiple visits into one. If you think you could benefit from our services please give us a call.

How to Care for Dentures

Dentures need to be cared for differently than normal teeth, and we want to ensure that our patients understand how to make the most of them. The trick to maintaining them is that they have to be kept moist at all times, but must also be kept clean to prevent plaque or fungus build-up. Below are some helpful rules.

Each night, patients should remove their dentures and brush them with a soft-bristled brush and toothpaste made specifically for dentures. (Soft-bristled toothbrushes are the only kind anybody should use for oral hygiene, but the special toothpaste is necessary because dentures don’t have a biological covering to protect them from grit.) Dentures should be left overnight in room-temperature water or cleaning solution unless they have exposed metal which could rust. Hot water will melt and reshape the plastic.

Before putting their dentures back in, patients should brush their gums and tongue. This will stimulate blood flow, which will preserve the mouth’s health and feeling. Patients with implant-supported dentures should brush in between their abutments. Any damage to the denture should be reported immediately to a professional. Some refitting over the patient’s life is expected, but patients should not attempt to manipulate the shape of the denture on their own.

Waterlase

One of the reasons we’re able to provide so many different kinds of treatments at Eric Meyer’s Fullerton dental office is that we have excellent tools. The Waterlase is our preferred brand of surgical laser. Though our doctors have many specialties, this water-guided handheld laser can be used for nearly all the operations on hard and soft tissue we perform.

Pain from the traditional dental drills had three main causes: heat, vibration, and pressure. The noise also tended to provoke a negative psychological reaction. Lasers produce no noise, pressure, or vibration, but early models still produced heat. The first generation of the Waterlase, which came on the market in 1998, fixed this problem by emitting a stream of water onto the surgical site. Not only was the water cooling, but it also caused the water molecules in the tissue to vibrate, lowering their resistance to the laser’s cutting.

Our periodontal specialist uses the Waterlase because it causes less bleeding than metal tools. We also use it for cutting away tooth decay because it is precise enough to minimize the risk of causing the tooth to crack. This means a more comfortable surgery for our patients and a shorter recovery time.

The 2-Minute Brushing Rule

When we hit the snooze button in the morning, two minutes flies by like lightning, when we are waiting in traffic, two minute seems like an eternity. At the sink, two minutes is the time you need to spend brushing your teeth in order to clean them adequately and reduce plaque. At the dental practice of Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS, we want you to understand why you should follow the 2-minute brushing rule.

Most people don’t even come close to brushing two minutes and if you don’t brush your teeth long enough, you may not be getting your teeth clean enough. Brushing twice a day and flossing daily establish the basics of good oral hygiene. Brushing helps to clear particles of food from the teeth, but a brush can’t reach between teeth, which is why flossing is also necessary. To make the two-minute mark seem like less of a lifetime, split the mouth into four quadrants. That way, it should take about 30 seconds each quadrant. The proper position of the brush head should be along the gum line, half on the gums and half on the teeth, pointing the bristles at a 45-degree angle. Don’t forget to brush every part of your mouth, including your tongue!

Types of Cavities and Treatment

Cavities or tooth decay is the destruction of your tooth enamel, the hard, outer layer of your teeth. The three types of cavities include a smooth surface cavity, root cavity, and pit and fissure cavity. If you are experiencing tooth discomfort, here at the dental practice of Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS, we can help identify the cause, determine whether or not you have a cavity, and provide treatment as needed.

Smooth surface cavities occur on the smooth sides of your teeth, while root cavities develop on the surface over the roots. Pit and fissure cavities occur on the chewing surface of your teeth. Neglecting your oral hygiene, along with frequent snacking and sipping sugary drinks are the main culprits behind cavities. When a cavity advances deep into the tooth, it may produce increased sensitivity to foods that are cold, hot, or sweet. There are three things to consider in the treatment of dental cavities: prevention, remineralization, and restoration. Treatment depends on how bad the cavity is.

The Temporomandibular Joint: Explained

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the jaw joint. You have two of them which work together as a pair, one in front of each ear. Without this joint, you would not be able to chew your food, yawn, or even speak. The joints connect the lower jaw bone (mandible) to the temporal bones of the skull on each side of the head. When this joint begins to cause facial pain, headaches, and/or jaw muscle stiffness, Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS, in Fullerton CA, can develop a treatment plan.

When you open your mouth, the rounded upper ends of the mandible on each side of the jaw glide along the joint socket at the base of the skull. They slide back to their original position when you close your mouth. This joint is unique in the sense that the articular surfaces of the bones never actually come in contact with one another – they are separated by an articular disk. This disk splits the joint into two synovial joint cavities, each lined by a synovial membrane. It is important to keep in mind that occasional clicking or discomfort in the jaw joint or chewing muscles are common, but if you have a serious concern for TMD, you should schedule a consultation with Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS.

If you have questions about the temporomandibular joint or TMJ/TMD, please give us a call. To learn more about the services provided at the practice, visit www.fullertondental.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS, in Fullerton CA, call 714-879-7943.

Pediatric Tooth Extraction

At the dental practice of Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS, pediatric tooth extraction may be suggested if your child has teeth that are potentially problematic, cannot be restored, or are not necessary to restore. Additionally, tiny teeth may need to be extracted for orthodontic treatment. Your child may be frightened about the procedure itself, but it is our promise to make him or her as comfortable as possible.

Prior to the surgery, Dr. Meyer will take an X-ray of the patient’s mouth. The X-ray allows him to determine the severity of the tooth’s damage. If it’s been determined that a tooth cannot be repaired, you will need to schedule an appointment for extraction. Once sedation options are discussed, Dr. Meyer will use the appropriate tools to extract the tooth. When the procedure is complete, it is critical that your child obey post-op instructions such as changing the gauze when necessary and feasting on only soft foods for the first 24 hours.

If you have questions about pediatric tooth extraction, please give us a call. To learn more about the services provided at the practice, visit www.fullertondental.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS, in Fullerton CA, call 714-879-7943.

Peri-Implantitis

For years, patients at Fullerton Dental have received dental implants from our highly trained doctors. Dental implants are among the safest surgeries, and are successful in nearly all cases. But because implants require life-long maintenance, it is occasionally possible for them to fail as the patient’s situation changes. The most common cause of implant failure is peri-implantitis.

Peri-implantitis is when the gum tissue surrounding an implant becomes inflamed. This sometimes occurs immediately after an implant is placed if dental cement leaks onto the gum, but this problem will usually be caught right away, and the cement can be easily cleaned away. More commonly, the gum tissue decays due to normal gingivitis, trapping acids at the base of the implant. Though implants are usually made of a titanium-nickel alloy, they are not immune to acidic corrosion, and their structure can be compromised. The zone at which they fuse with the surrounding bone tissue can also disintegrate, requiring the implant’s removal.

Proper oral hygiene is usually enough to prevent peri-implantitis, but this can be difficult if the patient has a disability or is on a medication which causes dry mouth or otherwise creates a risk of gingivitis. Anybody who notices the area around an implant becoming inflamed should schedule an appointment immediately.

Electric toothbrush apps

Manufacturers of dental products are making their wares smarter, so we thought we’d held guide our customers through their ever-expanding options for maintaining oral hygiene at home. Particularly interesting are efforts by electric toothbrush makers to integrate smart phone and tablet apps into their products. This kind of software is mostly marketed towards parents and people with disabilities.

Electric toothbrushes don’t require as much dexterity as manual toothbrushes and don’t require the brusher to use them for as long during each session (actually, it’s best not to). But some people still don’t reach every surface of every tooth. Some of the new apps provide feedback on which parts of the mouth the user has missed, whether they have brushed for long enough, and whether they need to adjust the toothbrush’s settings. Apps geared toward kids contain reward systems for brushing properly, and likewise provide feedback to adjust their technique. Progression through simple video games is the most common kind of reward, with success meant to instill good habits.

The new apps don’t do much to make electric toothbrushes more affordable, so whether they are worthwhile will depend a lot on each patient’s situation. But for people who haven’t gotten good results with manual toothbrushes, they might provide an extra incentive to give hi-tech home products a try.

Wisdom Tooth Decay

As we age, we acquire wisdom, and the same goes for wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth appear between the ages of 17-21 and are known as the third set of molars. When they erupt correctly, healthy wisdom teeth can help you chomp your food a little faster.  However, if they start to cause you pain and discomfort, you may need to schedule a consultation with Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS to discuss extraction.

If you bite on a piece of food that is too hard or you experience a mouth injury, wisdom teeth may become troublesome. They can also become cracked, broken, and decayed. Decay can form on any tooth surface, but when the decay begins to attack the wisdom teeth, depending on the position of the tooth it becomes difficult to clean. Depending on the individual case, Dr. Eric M Meyer may be able to fill the tooth, but even in cases where a filling could be successfully placed, if the wisdom tooth cannot be adequately maintained, recurrent decay can occur. Though many patients tend to procrastinate through the process, extraction is always best to avoid infection.

If your wisdom teeth are still intact and you have questions about removal, please give us a call. Toothbrush Care

Brushing your teeth plays an important everyday role for personal oral hygiene and effective plaque removal. You may not give much thought to cleaning your toothbrush; however appropriate toothbrush care and maintenance are important considerations for oral hygiene. At the dental practice of Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS, we want you to know how and when to replace, clean, and store your toothbrush.

The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush approximately every three to four months or sooner if bristles are frayed. However, toothbrushes will wear out more rapidly depending on factors unique to each patient. It is also important to never share a toothbrush because this practice could be a concern for people with compromised immune systems or existing infectious diseases. If your toothbrush comes in contact with another, thoroughly rinse the brush with warm tap water to remove any remaining toothbrush and debris. When you are done using the toothbrush, store it in an upright position and allow the toothbrush to air-dry until used again.

If you have further questions regarding toothbrush care, give us a call. To learn more about the services provided at the practice, visit www.fullertondental.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Eric M Meyer, DDS, in Fullerton CA, call 714-879-7943.

Veneers and Lumineers

The office of Eric M. Meyer in Fullerton is a high-tech clinic for general and cosmetic dentistry. Among our most highly-sought after cosmetic procedures are veneers. These thin porcelain shells fit over the front and edges of teeth, masking discoloration, chips, small gaps, and minor degrees of crookedness. While traditional veneers have a very high rate of approval among patients, Dr. Meyer’s office also offers the brand product Lumineers, which is less strenuous on patients during the application process.

The main difference between Lumineers and other veneers is their thickness. Older veneers were heavy enough to make a big difference on bones as small as the front teeth. To make them fit, dentists had to reshape their patients’ teeth by grinding and sanding them, which could cause a painful recovery. Lumineers are much thinner, which means they can usually be applied without making more than superficial changes to the teeth they are being placed over. Besides being less obtrusive and painful, they can also be removed.

Other than sanding, the application of traditional veneers and Lumineers is much the same. A doctor will make an impression of the patient’s mouth, and order custom-made porcelain shells from a manufacturer (Lumineers are made by DenMat Labs). Following a deep cleaning, they will be attached with dental cement. Neither kind of veneer relieves patients of their obligation to brush and floss regularly, but they can provide a huge boost in confidence and appearance.

Oral Cancer and HPV

At Dr. Eric Meyer’s Fullerton Dental practice, we’ve paid close attention to the latest research into oral cancers. The good news is that scientists have recently made progress identifying how cancers spread between different organs, which is relevant to a group of cancers which affect everything from the hard palate to the tonsils. The bad news is that, while overall cancer rates have declined, new diagnoses of oral cancer have skyrocketed in the United States and United Kingdom. Researchers believe this is due to the human papillomavirus (HPV).

In the past, most oral cancers were caused by nicotine use, so anti-cancer efforts focused on smoking. While these efforts successfully caused tobacco use to decline, they may have unintentionally created a false sense of security among young people which led them to forego oral cancer screenings. In fact, risky sexual practices have led to widespread oral HPV, particularly among young men, and while most strains of the virus have no known effect, there are at least nine which cause some kind of cancer.

HPV-related oral and oropharyngeal cancers usually develop further back in the throat than nicotine-related related cancers and are less likely to be noticed by patients before becoming extremely dangerous. Therefore, it is of crucial importance for sexually-active people of all ages to get oral cancer screenings regardless of their smoking or drinking habits.
