Mini Dental Implants

The doctors at Fullerton Dental are excited to offer the latest dental products, and want patients to know that mini dental implants make treatments possible for patients who could not benefit from traditional implants.  Mini dental implants are about half the diameter of a traditional dental implant. This allows them to be used in narrow spaces where regular implants were not an option.  Mini implants are used both to anchor restorations and aid in installing a full set of dentures.

The small size of these new implants makes it possible for them to be inserted right through the gums into the bone. No incision means no stitches, and eliminates the need for a recovery period. This means the restoration or denture can usually be placed right away or shortly after.  Mini implants can also be used to install a full upper or lower denture. Between 4 and 6 mini implants are placed along the gum line to serve as the base for securing the denture. Any of our doctors can tell you a mini implant is the right solution for you.

Invisalign

Invisalign is the invisible alternative to traditional braces for adults and teens, and the doctors at Fullerton Dental have seen Invisalign transform smiles for patients of all ages.  Invisalign is recommended to correct mild to moderate spacing or crowding of the teeth.  Any severe misalignment may require another method, so always consult your dentist.  An Invisalign treatment plan consists of a series of clear, removable plastic aligners that are custom-made for your teeth, and a typical treatment plan can be completed in less than a year.

To straighten your teeth with Invisalign, we begin with an examination. A dentist can determine if Invisalign will be effective in achieving the smile you want. Impressions or scans of your teeth are used to create a full set of aligners customized to your teeth and your treatment plan. Each set of aligners is worn for about two weeks, depending on your individual treatment plan.  The aligners should be worn at least 20 hours a day. You should remove the aligners to eat, and to brush and floss.

Causes of Bleeding Gums

With expert periodontists on staff at Dr. Eric Meyer’s Fullerton office, there’s no need for patients to tolerate bleeding gums. Although a bit of blood seeping out during brushing and flossing may be a normal sight to some people, it’s a sign of a problem which may require a dentist’s attention.

Bleeding gums are generally due to the accumulation of plaque and tartar on patients’ teeth near the gum line. The bleeding is caused by irritation to soft tissue by acid stuck to the tartar. Tartar should only be scraped away by a dental hygienist, but patients may be able to prevent further bleeding or plaque accumulation by brushing for a full two minutes with fluoridated toothpaste twice each day, which is recommended for everybody. However, it is possible that the toothbrush is contributing to the problem if its bristles are too hard; only soft-bristled toothbrushes should be used on teeth.

Gingivitis is especially likely to develop if the patient suffers from dry mouth. There are medications which can cause this, as well as ones which are blood thinners, which weakens gum tissue. Smokers are also at increased risk for bleeding gums, as are pregnant women.
