Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is the term for removing excess gum tissue from the teeth and sculpting the gum line.  At Fullerton Dental, dentists perform this procedure to expose more of a tooth, and it can be done for function or aesthetics.  Sometimes gum tissue is removed so there is room to affix a restoration like a crown to the tooth, and other patients request it to correct a gummy smile. We offer crown lengthening for cosmetics so that any patient can have their perfect smile.

Whichever reason patients are in need of crown lengthening, it is a simple in office procedure.  A local anesthetic is used while your dentist removes excess gum tissue with either a scalpel or laser tools.  The result is a visually pleasing ratio of teeth to gums that creates an even smile!  If you think your smile would benefit from crown lengthening, please contact us.

Crown Lengthening for Restoration

Having a healthy and attractive smile is important for total body health and confidence! For teeth that need work done below the gum line, Dr. Eric M. Meyer, DDS performs crown lengthening at his Fullerton, CA dental office.

Crown lengthening is needed when there is decay beneath the gum line or if a crown needs to be replaced, but the tooth has been broken off below the gum line. In addition, some people have what is commonly referred to as a “gummy” smile. This is when excess gum tissues covers part of the teeth, making them appear shorter than they are. The crown lengthening will be performed to make the teeth more aesthetically pleasing.

First, Dr. Meyer will make incisions to the gums to pull them back. In some cases, this is all that needs to be done to expose more of the teeth. In other cases, the bone tissue there holding the tooth in will also need to be removed. The gums are then cleaned with sterile salt water and stitched into place. When a crown lengthening is performed, even if only one tooth needs to be worked on, several teeth in the area will also be lengthened so that the gum line can heal in a natural line.

If you are in need of dental work below the gum line, or even want to see if crown lengthening can help a “gummy” smile, trust skilled and experienced Dr. Eric M. Meyer, DDS, of Fullerton, CA. To schedule an appointment, call (714) 879-7943. For more information, visit our website, www.fullertondental.com

Crown Lengthening in Fullerton, CA

A dentist’s first goal is always to save your teeth, which means that dental professionals have developed many dental procedures that help prevent tooth extraction. One such procedure is crown lengthening, which we use in cases where decay has decimated a tooth to a point where there is not enough tooth structure left upon which to fix a crown.

If a tooth has broken below the gum line or if decay has developed underneath an existing crown or filling, crown lengthening allows a new crown to be placed rather than extracting the tooth.

While called crown lengthening, this common surgical procedure does not actually lengthen the crown. What it does is lower the gum line, and it does this by removing gum tissue, bone or both to expose more of the tooth and provide a foundation for the crown.

The procedure is performed with a local anesthesia to numb the area. When the area is fully numb, Dr. Eric Meyer will pull the gums away from the teeth and expose the roots and surrounding bone. In some cases, removing a little of the gum tissue will expose enough of the tooth for placing a crown. However, it is more likely that some bone will also have to be removed from around the roots of the teeth. After removing the necessary amount of tissue and bone, the area will be washed and the gums stitched.

Our office works hard to always protect your teeth and to provide the best quality of dental care available. To schedule an appointment at our practice in Fullerton, CA, call 714.879.7943. For more information, please visit www.fullertondental.com.
